Small Business Week Phone Conference with President Obama

Posted on May 6, 2016 at 9:55 PM

President Obama and Valerie Jarrett (Senior Advisor to the President) hosted a national telephone conference through Business forward in support of Small Business Week on May 6, 2016. Teniele G. of Livin Lovely United, LLC had the opportunity represent the company during the phone conference where the President, the Senior Advisor, congressmen, and other business owners were able to touch on issues and changes to help benefit small businesses and workers in the United States.

President Obama touched on Trans-Pacific Partnership (TTP), which is the Presidents Trade Agreement. Ninety-five percent of the world’s consumers are outside of the United States; the more we sell abroad, the more higher-paying jobs we support here in the U.S. As of today the current trade policy has our businesses and workers at a disadvantage.

The TTP is a trade agreement with 11 countries in the Asia-Pacific, including Canada and Mexico that will eliminate over 18,000 taxes that various countries put on Made-in-America products.

The Criminal Justice Reform was another major topic that was discussed during the conference. In the United States, 600,000 inmates are released from prison. The reform wants to help ensure that those released are able to land a job and reintegrate into society. When they are not able to get employment, this causes a revolving door. The Criminal Justice Reform is encouraging the Fair Chance Business Pledge which was launched three weeks ago, and as of today 112 companies have joined such as Coca-Cola and Google.

Business owners taking part in the conference were able to ask questions directed to President Obama and to the Senior Advisor to the President, Valerie Jarrett. The questions that were not able to get answered during the conference were forwarded to the White House and will get a response in the upcoming days.
